Breaking ranks with the NAM and risking its independent credentials india has voted with the EU-trika fronting for the US in the IAEA.

Ever since it became a sovereign nation India has always been among the few countries, which has prudent foreign policy. During the cold war times, India along with China and Myanmar pioneered the cause of the Third world with the formation of the NAM. The formation of the NAM in 1954 and the resultant policy of equidistance from both the power blocks gave it a high moral standpoint in the international arena. But those are gone days. Today there is no two-power blocks. The USSR is no more. The world is being policed by the ‘Omnipotent’ US. India has also got to change. And it has changed. It is now ‘a responsible state with advanced nuclear technology’ and is a 'strategic partner' of the US. And this precisely is reflected in the recent stands and policies adopted by India.
The recent paradigm shift in the Indian foreign policy was exposed when it voted with the European Union troika(EU-3) that has been fronting for the US in the IAEA on September 24, 2005 in Vienna. India abstaining from or even voting against Iran couldn’t have altered the outcome. The US-EU axis would have got the resolution passed with a convincing majority. But that doesn’t make the Indian stand inconsequential for the Americans desperately needed the Indian vote just to deny Iran the moral superiority. India (being the world’s largest democracy and a major emerging economic power from the 3rd world) against it definitely debilitates Iran’s argument that the big powers are conspiring against the Third World to fulfill their imperialistic aspiration. Whatever bizarre explanations the Indian establishment might give, its vote Did Matter.
India and Iran has along history of bonhomie, which has been beneficial for both countries. They have always stood hand in hand to for the cause of the third world. But India has now broken ranks with the tradition and the NAM (Non Alignment Movement.). This rises questions on the morality and independent credentials of India. First of all there is no credible evidence suggests that Iran possess or develop WMDs (Weapons of Mass Destruction) but for the US rhetoric. And the Iraq quagmire is a testimony to how credible they are.
