Politics of Tiger-Census

What is in a Tiger-census for real estate lobbies? The question may seem absurd but not in the new-era of neo-liberal globalisation. The recent Tiger-census 2010 in Kerala is a classic example of how the business interests are manipulating the Government to omit many areas where tigers were spotted last year. The census covers Periyar and Parambikkulam tiger reserves of Kerala. The banks of the River Periyar from above Thattekkad is a haven for wild-life because of the abundance of bamboo-forest and water reservoirs. But many places like Thattekkad, Vadattupara, Kuttambuzha, Pooyamkutti, and where tigers were spotted are omitted in the latest census. The reason for this undoubtedly is the vested interests of te politicians business-men and religious leaders who have acquired acres of land there.
The ecocide that is happening in the region in the name of tourism is sure to cause lethal damages to the fragile ecosystem. The water scarcity in the area and resultant incidents of wild elephants entering people inhibited areas is is an indication of imbalances caused in the watersheds. Its time that people raise against this conspiracy and work towards protecting this pristine ecosystem.
