Towards a Better World?

When the missionaries came to Africa they had then Bible and we had the land. They said: “let us close our eyes and pray”. When we opened them, we had the Bible and they had the land.

When the US marines went to Afghanistan they had the power wand we had the post 9/11 paranoia. They said: “we will have Osama bin Laden behind the bars and terrorism would become history”. We closed our eyes and ‘watched’. Now that we have to open our eyes, to see that the terrorists- both Bin Laden and Bush- have the land and power in their hand we have a zillion more people under siege. Judging by our experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq we realize that the liberation that Bush promised and the eternal glory that Laden swears by are one and the same; a gory end at point blank.

Inestimable Afghan citizen perished, millions killed in Iraq, over 2000 US soldiers joined the majority. Yet nothing is over. Afghanistan is far from the model democracy that the Neocons promised. The Karzai government little influence outside the capital. No WMD has been discovered in Iraq. There is still no evidence that link Saddam and Bin Laden. Iraq is on the brink of a civil war. Terrorists spread their wings across the world unleashing their brutal rage. The world definitely is Not a Safer place to Live.
Yet the European Union troika and the US are cajoling the world opinion for another invasion. The obvious target must have been South Korea, but not this time! Because it already posses nuclear weapons, an attack might cost them dearly. So they have turned towards more vulnerable Iran. The modus operandi is the same. Iran, they say is a great threat to humanity. It sponsors terrorism. Its people are an oppressed lot under the tyranny of a few fanatics who rule the country. What more they are trying to secure nuclear weapons capabilities. (Under NPT and IAEA safeguards; strange isn’t it?). The issue has already been referred to the UN Security Council.

The diplomats and the public relations officers of The West are busy selling their ideas to the world as they did prior to the invasion of Iraq in 2003. The rest of the world it seems is yet to succumb to the pressure. Russia and China have expressed reservations about the plan. India no longer has any say in the matter as they themselves voted the issue out of their reach. But the advance the West has made by succeeding in referring the matter tom the UN is not inconsequential. We cannot dump one as a silly cynic if he says that the world hasn’t learned a thing from the Iraq experience.
